Background
Hema has worked for over 15 years with leaders and individuals across every level in large multi-national organizations across Africa. She also had work projects in Europe and Asia. She is a qualified Industrial /
Organizational Psychologist and also has a diverse Communications, Journalism and Marketing academic background. She has extensive work experience within the financial services and management consulting sectors. As an experienced organizational & leadership consultant, she has worked closely with global simulation & technology organizations in terms of business, brand & product development. Hema also lectured Organizational Behaviour at the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa. As founder & Director of an independent consulting practice ‘’Umbo
Human Potential Solutions, her passion lies in creating direction, alignment and commitment across both organisations and individuals.

Industry Experience
Hema’s passion lies in the innovative field of leadership & ‘potential’ development. She was appointed at various Executive levels in her previous roles which included the Head of Leadership Solutions for the Centre for Creative Leadership (CCL) Sub-Saharan Africa. As a world renowned global organisation, her role at CCL involved accountability for guiding, directing and supporting the full cycle of solution crafting (from conceptualisation, validation and proposition of business and leading edge leadership design solutions). Other roles included HR Head: Corporate Executive Office (Nedbank) where she worked with the various executive teams across the organization. Her varied areas of job expertise include transformation, people & leadership development, executive coaching, business development, facilitation, organisational development & change leadership, Business Driven Action Learning, marketing strategies, talent management and HR Strategy. She has worked with clients in a wide range of industries in SA and Africa. These include the banking, insurance and financial services, retail, public and government sectors, NGO, petroleum, food and beverage to mining industries.

Executive Coaching Approach
As an executive coach, Hema specializes in middle to senior executive coaching management levels. She also looks at group coaching, action development and team facilitation. Her additional focus area is on developing high potentials across organisations. She is also focusing on developing coaching competencies and capability for entrepreneurs in both the public and private sector contexts. Her personal leadership philosophy is that of self-empowerment, that at the core of every organisation lies its key people resource, which if thoughtfully empowered creates a powerful culture & environment for change and learning, thereby ‘igniting potential.’ Thus her coaching approaches vary from positive psychology to integrated and holistic systems perspective.

Leadership Development:
Hema has worked extensively in the Leadership Development field for over 15 years. She has worked across organisations in terms of the customisation of leadership programmes from junior management to executive level. She has designed programmes across the financial services sector from Standard Bank to Ecobank in Africa. Others clients across diverse industries include SAB Miller, Angolan Institute for Public Sector Services (ISEP), NEPAD to Transnet.   

In her previous role as Head: Leadership Solutions for the Center of Creative Leadership (CCL) Sub-Saharan Africa she further integrated best practice global research with business strategic realities. As a result some of her key areas of specialty include:

Organisational Development
Leadership culture is the meaning that people make and the tools they have to create shared direction, alignment and commitment throughout the organisation. The goal of culture change work is to purposefully and actively build capability for new ways of working. It allows for the new thinking, beliefs, tools and processes that will result in the organisational success. As business strategies get more complex, the culture is required to grow into the level of complexity required to implement it. It is critical to ensure that the organisational and business strategy aligns to the people development and talent strategies. Hema has worked with the design and implementation of varying OD interventions across various organisations. As Head: OD, People Development & Transformation at Nedbank Corporate some of her areas of expertise over the years included:

Hema was also critical in the design and facilitation of one of the biggest OD interventions across Mutual & Federal. By utilising the concept of an Indaba, the entire staff count of 1200+ employees participated simultaneously across 5 regions / countries within Africa. This was the largest scale OD leadership intervention in CCL’s 45 year recorded history.

People / Talent Management
Talent management is the work of designing and implementing the strategies, systems, and processes needed for talent sustainability—an organization’s ability to continuously attract, develop, and retain people with the capabilities and commitment needed for current and future organizational success. Hema has worked both at an operational and strategic level to assist organisations in managing the practical realities of resource management. She has managed several internal talent databases and worked with several pioneering talent incubator programmes such as the Kelloggs Foundation. She has also been involved in designing and developing an integrated talent management framework which further encompassed aspects of both an Employee Value (EVP) and Customer Value Proposition (CVP). Her recent work focused on global research in terms of understanding the future talent leadership practices of the top tier within the leadership pipeline across organisations in South Africa. The focus was on the ‘Next Generation Leadership’’ trends based on executive interviews and case studies across Africa.
